Most TRANSFORMER regions have traditionally been linked to the energy sector by exploiting non-sustainable and pollutant energy sources. Transformation towards climate neutrality in that sector requires identifying and monitoring the energy supply chain and the sectors from the region that can use sustainable energy (e.g. mobility and freight infrastructures).

The transformation of the energy sector in TRANSFORMER regions can be achieved by taking a cross-sectorial approach to coordinate and harmonise various initiatives that can spill over into other sectors.

To ensure the transition of these regions’ energy systems towards climate neutrality, it is crucial to integrate them into a renewable-based and energy-efficient energy system, which requires a credible commitment from decision-makers and energy suppliers.

The transition towards climate-neutral energy production will also require new storage technologies, demand flexibility and sector-coupling to ensure the stability of the transition.
